Celebrate National Sex Day on June 9th!
In this day and age, there seems to be a holiday for every occasion and object imaginable. From mangos to mopeds, there’s no shortage of days that are set aside in the calendar year for the various objects that we encounter on a regular basis. June 9th is one day in particular that we celebrate one of the oldest passions and pursuits known to the human race – SEX. That’s right, National Sex Day is not only a thing, but we whole heartily encourage you to celebrate it in any way you like. Solo or partnered, it’s time to surrender your loins to the fruitfulness of passion.
A Brief History in Sexuality
The history of sexuality is a fascinating one, full of various peaks and valleys. We can only assume that the earliest human beings figured out how to reproduce, seeing as the earth has been steadily populated for generations. Sexuality has had an interesting relationship with society, at times being embraced and other times scandalized. Join us now as we look back at the evolution of this necessity for existence.
- 4 AD Sexuality and the many positions and pleasures it holds are thoroughly explored in India in a text later known as the Kama Sutra. Many of these are still practiced today as the manuscript has been reprinted several times since then.
- 72 AD At the time of the eruption and subsequent burial of Pompeii by Mount Vesuvius, the Ancient Romans had whole city streets devoted to brothels, and many phalluses were unearthed in the city during excavations. While these were considered quite scandalous upon discovery, scholars later determined that such items were meant to symbolize fertility and good fortune.
- The Middle Ages Sexuality becomes taboo and is relegated to only being used for the purposes of reproduction. This puritanical mindset will dominate many cultures for centuries to come and linger about today in the modern era.
- 1953 Hugh Hefner publishes a new magazine called Playboy. As a result, many attitudes regarding sexuality slowly begin to change in the preceding years, and sexuality will become more open throughout the 1960s and 70s.
Other Ways to Acknowledge Sexuality
Of course, there’s much more to sexuality than fornication. In honor of National Sex Day, you might want to consider being more open about sexuality in both discussion and practice. The stigma that was once almost impossible to overcome is almost non-existent. No longer talked about in whispers, we can now discuss the topic with openness and comfort.
